Planning My Trip to Tokyo: Points, Hotels, and Flight Hunting

I’ve had jobs in the past where I traveled to different states for months at a time, which helped me rack up plenty of hotel points.

On top of that, I’ve opened a few credit cards and hit their sign-up bonuses, so I’ve managed to stash away a decent amount of rewards.

With Tokyo in mind, I opened my Hilton and Wyndham apps to see what I could find.

Wyndham? No options at all.

Hilton, on the other hand, had one hotel—priced at 2.1 million points per night.

Nothing like a reminder of where you stand in the grand scheme of hotel loyalty programs.

Luckily, Hilton also has the DoubleTree near Tokyo Disney for around 50,000 points per night.

The cash price runs about $200–$250 a night, and honestly, I don’t think that’s a great value for my money.

So now I’m thinking about alternatives: maybe a capsule hotel for a couple of nights, and I definitely want to try a traditional ryokan at some point.

With lodging mostly sorted out, I moved on to flights.

Using my Delta miles, I found some decent one-way options.

I browsed Expedia for cheap flights.

There were a few flights around the $300 range, but they all had extra fees attached.

In the end, I decided to upgrade to a $400 Air Canada flight—still reasonable and with fewer strings attached.
